Superintendents of police (SPs) have been selected for all 64 districts through a lottery ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections next year.

The lottery was held at the State Guest House Jamuna, the official residence of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, on Monday, according to several police sources.

"The selections of 64 district superintendents of police have been finalised through a lottery," said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali, who attended the lottery, on Tuesday. "However, no decision has yet been made regarding the DMP."

Police Commissioner Sazzat attended the lottery event.

On Aug 6, Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said following a ministry meeting on law and order that SPs and officers-in-charge (OCs) would be selected for districts through a lottery system ahead of the polls.

Though a lottery has been held at the Jamuna, it is not yet clear how it was organised.

A source at Police Headquarters says that a list was made after excluding those who served during the polls under the Awami League regime and provided to the home ministry. The lottery was then held based on that list.

Those selected through the lottery will be given their assignations soon, the source said.
