Supporters of Jatiotabadi Swecchasebak Dal leader Azizur Rahman Muchabbir have staged protests in Dhaka’s Farmgate and Karwan Bazar areas, demanding justice for his killing.
The procession began after Friday prayers from West Tejturi Bazar and marched through Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue and Farmgate before ending at Karwan Bazar.
Local residents, Swecchasebak Dal leaders and activists, and traders from Karwan Bazar took part in the demonstration.
Muchabbir was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in an alley near Ahsanullah Technology Institute, adjacent to Hotel Superstar on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, shortly after 8pm on Wednesday.
Abu Sufian Bepari Masud, general secretary of the Van Workers’ Union of Tejgaon Thana, who was accompanying Muchabbir at the time, was also shot.
Muchabbir’s funeral prayers were held on Thursday outside the BNP central offices in Karwan Bazar and Naya Paltan.
He was a former general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Swecchasebak Dal and served as joint secretary of the party’s central parliament.
During the tenure of the previous Awami League government, he was arrested multiple times and jailed.
Muchabbir’s wife, Suraiya Begum, told police that her husband had been receiving death threats for some time prior to the killing.
Police are probing whether Muchabbir’s murder is linked to recent violence involving traders in Karwan Bazar.
On Dec 29 last year, traders formed a human chain protesting extortion in the area. An attack took place during the protest, and police later arrested 11 people after a case was filed.
Officials involved in the investigation said that as the influence of those arrested in the traders’ attack weakened, Muchabbir was allegedly attempting to assert control over the area, heightening tensions.
Investigators are also looking into a separate dispute over the occupation of a garage in the Farmgate area, in which Muchabbir is suspected to have been involved. Police say tensions had been simmering between rival groups over the issue.
For these reasons, investigators are examining whether the threats mentioned by Muchabbir’s wife are connected to the killing.
At the same time, law enforcers say they are also investigating possible political motives behind the murder.
