Bangladesh’s primary concern in the ongoing Middle East conflict is the safety of its citizens, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has said.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday amid controversy over Dhaka’s stance on the Iran-US-Israel conflict, he said the government’s position is “simple”: the welfare of Bangladeshis in the region comes first.
“We do not believe war or conflict is a solution. We want the issue resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy as quickly as possible,” the minister added.
The remarks come after Bangladesh issued two statements on the conflict.
On Sunday, the government condemned violations of sovereignty by several Middle Eastern countries, naming Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Iran was not mentioned, which drew criticism.
On Monday, a new statement expressed shock at the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, offering condolences to the Iranian people while reaffirming that dialogue and adherence to international law remain the path to resolving disputes.
Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam met with representatives of the Dhaka-based Saudi, Qatari, Kuwaiti, and UAE embassies to discuss the situation.
The foreign minister said officials from these countries assured the safety and security of Bangladeshis living in their territories.
The government confirmed that two Bangladeshis have died and seven others were injured across different countries in the region.
Efforts are ongoing to repatriate the dead, although flight disruptions have delayed immediate return.
Minister Khalilur emphasised that the government will continue to support citizens affected by the conflict and take all necessary measures to ensure their welfare.
“Protecting Bangladeshis abroad is our foremost national interest. Should any citizen wish to return, the government will facilitate it,” said Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir.
