Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has arrested former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) retired lieutenant general Sheikh Mamun Khaled.

He was detained from Dhaka’s Mirpur in the early hours of Thursday, DB Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said.

However, he did not immediately specify the case in which Mamun was arrested.

A Signals Corps officer, Sheikh Mamun joined the DGFI as director (FSIB) in December 2007. He was subsequently appointed director (CIB) in June 2008, replacing Brigadier Chowdhury Fazlul Bari.

He later returned to DGFI as director general, succeeding Lieutenant General Mollah Fazle Akbar.

After serving in the role for around one and a half years, he was replaced by Major General Akbar Hossain.

During his career, he also served as vice-chancellor at the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) and later took charge of the National Defence College (NDC) as a three-star general before retiring.

He was serving as a colonel in Cumilla during the events of the military-backed takeover on Jan 11 2007 carried out under the façade of a civilian caretaker government.

About 48 hours after the arrest of former three-star general Masud Uddin Chowdhury, detectives have detained another former three-star Army officer in a rapid crackdown on former senior military figures.

Discussions also revolve around former Army officer Mamun’s role during the 1/11 period, including allegations that the DGFI was drawn into political activities.

Following the fall of the Awami League government during the July Uprising, the court, acting on an ACC petition in May 2025 during the interim administration, barred Mamun and his wife from leaving the country.

At the time, the graft watchdog had announced an investigation into alleged financial irregularities and issues linked to his assets.
