The assailants, who broke into her house in the middle of the night, also stabbed her father-in-law when he tried to confront them.

He is currently receiving treatment at the Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

Mamoni Dey, 24, was the wife of Rupon Dey. She lived with her one-and-a-half-year old daughter at her in-laws house in the Mohanagar village under the Upazila's Harualchhari Union.

Three youths broke into the house around 12:30 am on Sunday and tried to rape her, Mamoni's cousin Indrajit Dhar told bdnews24.com.

"The assailants slit her throat with knife as she ran out of her room yelling for help."

Mamoni's in-laws rushed out of their room after hearing her screams, said Indrajit.

Her mother-in-law grabbed the infant child and locked themselves inside a room. She cried out for help through the window.

And her father-in-law, Milon Dey, was stabbed when he tried to confront the assailants, he added.

Mamoni's mother-in-law believes that the youths entered the house through the roof after climbing the boundary wall.

"We have arrested two people in connection with the incident. We recovered a blood-stained knife from them. The deceased's mother-in-law has identified the two assailants," said Bhujpur Police OC Md Abdullah.

The police are carrying out efforts to arrest the others involved in the incident, added the OC.

The cupboard in Mamoni's room was found open, said Anjan Dey, the deceased's brother-in-law. Her necklace is also missing.
