A ten-member panel was formed to end the confusion over the date of Shab-e-Barat, according to State Minister for Religious Affairs Sheikh Md Abdullah.

“Until then, the current decision on the date of Shab-e-Barat will remain in force,” he told the media after a meeting at the Islamic Foundation in Dhaka on Saturday.

The national moon-sighting committee on Apr 6 announced that the moon for the month had not been sighted and so Shab-e-Barat,  a night for social prayers on the lunar Islamic calendar, which falls on the 15th of Shaban, would be celebrated on the night of Apr 21.

The Apr 6 decision was based on information from the district administrations, Islamic Foundation, offices of the Meteorological Department, and Space Research and Remote Sensing Organisation.

Leaders of Mojlisu Ruiyatul Hilal, an organisation of Islamists, claimed at a press conference in Dhaka earlier on Apr 11 that the moon for Shaban was sighted from Khagrachhari and different other places on Apr 6 but the authorities ignored the information.
