Uttara AC explosion: Woman succumbs to burns, raising death toll to two

A woman has succumbed to the burns she suffered after an air conditioning unit exploded in Dhaka’s Uttara.

Her husband had previously died from his injuries in the same explosion.

Bilkis Baby, 40, passed away at the Dhaka Medical College Burn Unit on Monday afternoon.

Her husband, 50-year-old Alamgir Bhuiyan, died on Sunday afternoon.

The two had suffered burns on 95 percent of their bodies, said Dhaka Medical College Police Outpost Inspector Md Bachchu Mia, citing doctors.

A fire had broken out on the fifth floor of the Uttara Sector 3 holding 41 building at 3:30 am on Mar 19.

A fire service unit had gone to the scene and put out the fire.

According to Alamgir’s brother Tanzin Shahriar, his brother and sister-in-law had been in one room of the home while their children were in another. The fire sparked in the Alamgir and Bilkis’s room and spread.

The children were able to escape the flames because they were in another room.

In addition to running a business, Alamgir was the Shecchashebok League president of the Airport Thana. Bilkis was the organising secretary of the Uttara West Thana Mohila League.

Preparations are underway to bury the couple at their ancestral home in Narayanganj, said Tanzin Shahriar.
