Various public and private organisations are paying tribute to Sheikh Mujib, the architect of Bangladesh’s independence, on his birthday, which coincides with National Children’s Day.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on Mar 17, 1920 in Gopalganj’s Tungipara. In time he would help put Bangladesh on the world map.

Sheikh Hasina placed a floral wreath in front of the portrait of Bangabandhu at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum on Dhanmondi Road 32 at 6:45 am on Sunday in her role as the prime minister.

She then paid her respects as the Awami League president.

She then observed a moment of silence alongside other senior leaders of the Awami League.

Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah and Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam also paid their respects to the Father of the Nation.

After Hasina’s departure the Chhatra League, Jubo League, Sramik League, Mohila League, Shechhashebok League, Jubo Mohila League, Krishak League, other Awami League bodies, associated organisations and social and cultural groups placed flowers in front of Bangabandhu’s portrait.

After paying his respects, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif told reporters:

“Next year, Mar 17, 2020, will be the centenary of Bangabandhu’s birth. We will celebrate his centenary with great enthusiasm. We will invite leaders from various countries across the globe. We will celebrate Bangabandhu’s birthday at the international level.”

National flags and Awami League flags are being at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhanmondi and at Awami League offices across the country to commemorate Bangabandhu’s birthday and National Children’s Day.

An Awami League delegation, led by Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina, paid its respects at the grave of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara at 10 am. They then held a prayer service. A children’s festival, book fair and other cultural events have been organised in the area.

The Awami League has organised a conference at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon. The event will be chaired by party chief Sheikh Hasina.
