Bangladesh hails historic global deal to manage migration crisis 'proposed by Hasina'

The non-binding 'UN global compact for migration' that focusses on safe, orderly and regular migration for improving international cooperation on all forms of migration, from refugees to skilled workers, was adopted in Marrakesh on Dec 10.

Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque led the Bangladesh team at the UN summit for adoption of the deal.

The foreign ministry on Tuesday said the proposal for the ‘Global Compact for migration’ was made by the prime minister in her address at the UN General Assembly in 2016.

The foreign secretary during the adoption affirmed Bangladesh’s full support to its implementation.

Bangladesh’s Permanent Representatives to UN offices in Geneva M. Shameem Ahsan, and Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN in New York Masud Bin Momen, and Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Rownaq Jahan were also present.
