At least two people have been killed and four others injured in gunfights when two Awami League groups clashed over control of sandbanks in the Padma River in Pabna.
The deceased are Abdul Makek, 50, and his cousin Laskar Ali Khan, 65, from Arangabad Khoyerbagan village under Bharhara Union Council.
The clashes between supporters of Bharhara Union Council Chairman Abu Sayeed and Laskar’s son Sultan Mahmud erupted on Monday evening.
Assistant Superintendent of Police in Pabna Ebne Mizan confirmed the deaths.
Pabna Sadar Police Station OC Jalal Uddin, quoting locals, said the two groups have a longstanding dispute over the shoals from where hundreds of trucks of sands are lifted every day during winter.
The deaths occurred when the shootings took place, the OC said.
“I can’t tell you more. I am on my way to the area now,” he added.
Sultan told bdnews24.com Sayeed, the organising secretary of Pabna Sadar Upazila Awami League, shot his father Laskar dead.
Sultan’s nephew Ratul Hasan said Sayeed actually targeted Sultan but Laskar came in the line of fire and got shot.
Sayeed denies any involvement with the clashes.
