The police who discovered the bodies on Sunday believe the four youths died in “gangland violence”.

Abdullah Al Mamun, additional superintendent of police, said they seized bullets, two pistols and a microbus from the scene.

“The dead have not been identified. Our initial investigation, which found pistols and bullets at the scene, suggests that an altercation between gangs or criminals may have resulted in the deaths.”

The four men were found dead next to the highway in the Panchrukhi area, two on either side of the highway, he said.

All four had bloody wounds on the back of their heads, but no other injuries on their bodies, police said.

Hundreds gathered in the area after news spread that the bodies had been found by the busy road.

According to local resident Raihan, he heard four gunshots in the night. He did not leave his home then, but saw the bodies by the road in the morning.

“A microbus was lying by the side of the road. Police found a pistol under one of the bodies when they came to investigate.

The bodies have been recovered and sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for autopsy, said Araihazar Police OC MA Haque.

“They are all about 30 to 35 years of age. One of them wore a lungi and a purple T-shirt. The rest were wearing jeans and T-shirts. The backs of their heads were bloody and damaged.”

The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy, said police ASl Mamun.
