He died at 8:00am Bangladesh time on Saturday, said his Personal Secretary Nurul Haque Akash.

Osman Gani fell sick in mid-July and was diagnosed with lung cancer, Akash told bdnews24.com. He went to Singapore General Hospital for treatment on Aug 14.

“He went to the hospital on Tuesday as he had difficulty breathing and was taken to the ICU. His condition deteriorated and he passed away on Saturday 8:00 am.”

The family has begun the process to bring Gani’s body home, Akash said citing Gani’s son Tapas in Singapore.

“We have contacted the Bangladesh High Commission in Singapore to bring the body home as soon as possible, maybe on the latest Singapore Airlines flight.”

The government had appointed Osman Gani as panel mayor on Sept 4 last year when the then DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq went abroad for medical treatment. Osman Gani continued to serve as panel mayor after the demise of Annisul Huq.

Osman Gani was the councillor of ward 21 in DNCC and also the president of Badda Thana wing of the Awami League.
