The incident occurred at the Diesel Colony Mosque ground in Jhautala on Friday afternoon, police said.

The boy, ‘Sifat’, fell into the old tank while playing with other children at the ground, Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Alauddin Talukder at Chattogram Medical College Hospital police camp said.

One Imran Hossain, 25, fell down the tank when he tried to rescue Sifat.

Imran’s brother Rubel Hossain, 18, also fell there as he came to save the boy and his brother.

A doctor pronounced all three brought dead at the hospital, the ASI said.

Fire Service official Md Jasim Uddin told bdnews24.com they pulled up the trio from the eight to 10 feet deep tank in an unconscious state and sent them to the hospital on being informed.

“They fell unconscious due to methane gas formed in the abandoned tank,” the Fire Service official said.

They died after inhaling the gas, ASI Alauddin said citing the doctor.
