Prime Minister Hasina arrives in Sydney to receive Global Women’s Leadership Award

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has arrived in Sydney for a three-day visit where she will receive the Global Women's Leadership Award.

She will receive the prestigious award during Global Summit on Women at the invitation of her Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull.

The prime minister arrived at Kingsford Smith Airport at 7am local time by a Thai Airways flight and was received by Bangladesh High Commissioner to Australia Md Sufiur Rahman.

Hasina travelled from Dhaka to Sydney via Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok where she had a stopover at 5pm local time.

Besides her sister Sheikh Rehana, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and State Minister for Women and Children’s Affairs Meher Afroze Chumki accompaned the prime minister. They will stay in Hotel Intercontinental in Sydney during the visit.

The prime minister met Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on the first day of her visit. She will also meet Vietnam President Trần Đại Quang there.

Hasina will receive the Global Women's Leadership Award at International Convention Centre Sydney on Friday evening.

She will highlight her government's initiatives for women’s empowerment and mainstreaming them in the national development in her speech.

US-based Global Summit of Women will give the award for Hasina's leadership in women’s education and entrepreneurship in Bangladesh.

The premier will visit Western Sydney University on Saturday morning. She will have a bilateral meeting with Turnbull on Saturday afternoon, mainly focusing on education, sports, human resources development, trade and investment, energy, power, agriculture and ICT.

Hasina is likely to join a reception organised by expatriate Bangladeshis in Sydney at Sofitel Hotel on Saturday evening.

She will be heading back to country on Sunday afternoon.

The prime minister last visited Australia in 2011 to attend the 22nd Commonwealth Summit.
