The day began with the hoisting of the National Flag on Tuesday morning by the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Denmark Muhammad A. Muhith in the presence of the officials and staff members of the Embassy.

A discussion meeting was also organised in the evening at Chancery auditorium which was participated by the members of the cross-section of Bangladeshi community living in Denmark.

The session started with recitation from the holy Quran followed by reading out of messages from the President, and the Prime Minister released on this occasion. A documentary highlighting the significance of the day was also screened.

Speaking to the audience, Ambassador Muhith paid homage to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who proclaimed the independence in the early hours of Mar 26 in 1971.

He recalled Bangabandhu's 23 years of arduous struggle and sagacious leadership led the Bangalee nation to achieve an independent Bangladesh.

He also recalled with deep respect the leadership of the Mujibnagar Government and the three million martyrs and two hundred thousand women who sacrificed their honour that brought a secular, progressive and democratic Bangladesh into existence.

The first government-in-exile was formed on Apr 10, 1971 in Kushtia district with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman named as the president. But the oath-taking of the cabinet in exile was held on Apr 17 at a mango grove of Badyanath Tala on the Bangladesh-India border.

Later it was renamed 'Mujibnagar', and the provisional government in exile there came to be known as 'Mujibnagar Government'.

Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam had taken oath as the acting president of the provisional government in exile in the absence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Tajuddin Ahmed was its first prime minister, M Monsur Ali finance minister, Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad foreign minister and HM Qamruzzaman took oath as the home, and relief and rehabilitation minister.

Mujibnagar was also declared the first capital of independent Bangladesh.
