Bangladesh to celebrate Shab-e-Barat on May 1 night

Muslims in Bangladesh are set to celebrate Shab-e-Barat on the night of May 1, with a public holiday the next day.

The National Moon-Sighting Committee announced the day after the sighting of the moon for the month of Shaban in the Arabic calendar on Tuesday.

The committee sat at the Islamic Foundation with Moazzem Hossain, joint secretary, religious affairs, in the chair.

After the meeting, Islamic Foundation Director General Shamim Mohammad Afjal told bdnews24.com the month of Shaban will start on Wednesday and so Shab-e-Barat will be observed on the night of May 1 or the 15th of Shaban.

The Shab-e-Barat festival is celebrated 15 days before the start of the Ramadan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims across the world.

Besides offering prayers overnight, Muslims in Bangladesh cook and exchange food, and distribute meals of bread and Halua among the poor.

May 1, International Workers Solidarity Day, is also a public holiday in Bangladesh.
