“As asked, I am getting ready to appeal against the verdict. The ACC has taken the decision to seek stricter punishment," Khurshid Alam Khan, a lawyer for the ACC, told bdnews24.com on Monday.

Earlier in the day, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court granted the State and the ACC the permission to challenge the four-month interim bail Khaleda secured from the High Court, suspending the bail until the next hearing of the case on May 8.

On Feb 8, a special judge’s court handed the sentence to the former prime minister. It also sentenced her son and BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman, and four others to 10 years in prison.

Judge Md Akhteruzzaman noted in the verdict he considered the physical condition, age and social status of Khaleda in deciding about her penalty.

The BNP claims the government had orchestrated the trial of Khaleda to keep her out of the next general elections scheduled to be held by the end of this year.

Khaleda has been in the old Dhaka Central Jail on Nazimuddin Road since the delivery of the verdict.

BNP leaders also allege that the government is obstructing her freedom on bail.
