Abdur Rauf, the lawyer for Zannatul Ferdous, told bdnews24.com on Saturday that a court in Pabna agreed to hear the case and asked the accused people to appear on Apr 24.
Zannatul from Paikorhati village of Santhia Upazila accused her husband Al Amin, and his parents Mizanur Rahman and Bulbuli Khatun from Kazipur of the same Upazila of torturing her for dowry in a case started on Thursday.
Al Amin, a constable, working in Chittagong, denied the allegation. He told bdnews24.com he sent a divorce letter to Zannatul on Feb 26 because she had ‘behaved badly’ with him over family issues.
According to the case dossier, Zannatul married Al Amin on Feb 21, 2014, on a Tk 700,000 ‘Denmohar’ or dower he had promised to pay her. The marriage was not registered at the time.
She alleged Al Amin and his family later demanded Tk 500,000 more from her family as dowry and tortured her as her family could not pay the sum. They sent Zannatul back to her home in December the same year.
“My family spent all the money my father left in my wedding. But my husband has deceived me,” she told bdnews24.com.
Her mother Nasrin Nahar said their neighbours who witnessed the transaction managed to have Al Amin register the marriage later after pressuring him.
She said they decided to start the case after Al Amin sent the divorce letter.
