Hamid, now in the city-state, spoke about the matter with his Singapore counterpart Halimah Yacob by phone on Friday.

The president went to Singapore on Thursday on a six-day tour for eye treatment and medical check-up. He is staying at the Marina Mandarin hotel there.

The President’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told bdnews24.com by phone that Hamid and Yacob exchanged greetings when she called him.

Yacob congratulated Hamid for re-election and also enquired about his health while Hamid congratulated her for becoming the first female president of the country.

“The president also said Bangladesh always emphasises relations with Singapore. He sought Singapore’s support to send back the Rohingyas to their homeland,” Joynal said.

Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Singapore scheduled for Mar 11, Hamid said the tour would take the relations between the two countries to a ‘new level’.
