The incident occurred late on Saturday night on the Shahbazpur-Dewra regional road, said Sarail Police Station OC Mafizul Islam.

The dead have been identified as Bashar, 33, and Enta, 32.

“The two detained robbers were taken on a weapons raid by police,” the OC said. “Along the way the team was attacked by their accomplices, who were trying to free them. Police returned fire. Both the robbers were shot.”

The ‘robbers’ were taken to the Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.

Police claim that five police officials, including Sarail Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Moniruzzaman Fakir, were injured in the ‘shootout’.

A pipegun and two cartridges were recovered from the scene, said OC Mafizul.
