During a syndicate meeting on Monday, the CU took the decision to recognise Mukherjee for his contributions to society and for being a genuine friend of Bangladesh, he told bdnews24.com.
Mukherjee will arrive at the CU on Jan 16 to receive the degree. He will visit Rauzan, the birthplace of Indian independence activist Master Da Surya Sen, and other spots bearing memories of the revolutionary in the port city the same day.
A reception will be arranged for Mukherjee at the Radisson Blu Chittagong Bay View hotel at 7pm.
The Chittagong City Corporation is eager to honour Mukherjee by handing him the memorial key of the port city, said CCC Chief Executive Officer Md Shamsuddoha. The matter now awaits approval from the Indian authority, he said.
“We have written a letter to the Indian High Commission which now awaits approval from Delhi as Delhi decides any tour schedule for the former president.”
Mukherjee visited Narail, the birthplace of his wife Suvra Mukherjee, in March 2013.
Mukherjee ended his tenure as the 13th president of India in July last year. His wife died in 2015.
