The deceased has been identified as Golam Quddus Bhiku. He was the director of an organisation named Protyasha Shamaj Kalyan.

“We believe Bhiku was shot in the head by a pistol at close range,” said Jessore Kotowali Police Station OC AKM Azmal Huda. “An explosive was also detonated. We are working to arrest the perpetrators.”

On Saturday night, Bhiku left the office for home in a private car around 9:30pm after a meeting, said Protyasha Shamaj Kalyan Health Department Director Mina Mandol.

Mandol says the news of his murder came shortly afterwards.

Bhiku was shot and two explosives were detonated in the area, she said. Locals rushing to the scene found Bhiku prone.

He was quickly taken to the emergency room of Jessore General Hospital, where he was declared dead.

According to Bhiku’s driver Abu Taher, he had dropped off his employer near the bazaar at Jessore suburb block-B around 9:30pm. He received the news of his death about a half hour later.

Bhiku lived with his second wife at a home in the suburb, Mandol said. His first wife had filed a case against him and Bhiku was to go to a hearing on Dec 5.
