Faruk murder: HC scraps MP Rana’s bail appeal

The High Court has scrapped a bail petition filed by Tangail-3 MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana over the murder of freedom fighter Faruk Ahmed.

The court also settled the pending rule regarding his bail at the hearing on Sunday.

Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud and Nurul Islam Sujon represented Rana at the hearing, while the state was represented by Deputy Attorney General Nazibur Rahman.

The High Court ordered the completion of the case within six months, Rahman told bdnews24.com. It also ordered the prison authority to bring Rana to court for every hearing.

Awami League leader Faruk Ahmed's bullet-riddled body was found in 2013, in front of his home in the town's College Para neighbourhood.

Police pressed charges against Rana and 14 others, including the lawmaker's three brothers.

A Tangail court sent Rana to jail after he surrendered in September last year.

On Apr 13 this year, a High Court bench granted interim bail to Rana pending a rule asking why he should not be granted bail.

On Apr 18, the chamber judge stayed the bail until May 8 after a state petition and sent the case to the Appellate Division.

An appellate bench led by then Chief Justice SK Sinha adjourned the hearing in the case for four months and ordered the trial to end within six months. The matter has been adjourned several more times since.

On Oct 19, acting Chief Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah kept the stay order on the bail and ordered the rule to be settled within four weeks.

The bail plea was scrapped at Sunday’s hearing.
