Bangladesh seeks Singapore’s support for durable solution to Rohingya crisis

Bangladesh has sought Singapore’s support for early repatriation of Myanmar nationals from Bangladesh and also for securing a durable solution to the decades-old Rohingya crisis, the foreign ministry said.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali sought the support when the new non-resident Singapore High Commissioner to Bangladesh (based in Singapore) Derek Loh Eu-Tse called on him at his office on Tuesday.

The foreign minister also said ASEAN, an association of Southeast Asian countries in which Singapore is also a member, can play “important role” in addressing the Rohingya crisis.

The High Commissioner who is based in Singapore also met State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam, separately.

Congratulating the new High Commissioner, the ministers expressed satisfaction over the existing close relations between the countries.

The foreign minister stressed on further deepening of bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and other areas of mutual interest.

He particularly encouraged Singaporean investment in the energy and infrastructure sector of Bangladesh.

The High Commissioner reiterated Singapore’s interest in the power generation and LNG sector, airport and port development, and management areas, the foreign ministry said.
