The incident occurred in the Sharankhola Range area on Monday morning, said RAB-8 Deputy Captain Maj Sohel Rana Prince.

The dead, Moktar Molla, was the second-in-command of local bandit leader Liton, the RAB official said citing locals.

“RAB received a tip-off on the location of Liton and seven or eight of his accomplices and began the operation,” Prince told bdnews24.com.

“When the bandits opened fire, RAB retaliated. The bandits fled after a nearly 35-minute gunfight that started around 8:15am. RAB later recovered a bullet-ridden corpse from the area.”

A double-barrel gun, a single-barrel gun, a sawn-off rifle, two one-shooter guns, 16 pipeguns and 37 rounds of ammunition were recovered afterwards, the RAB official said.

Locals identified Molla, but his address has not been ascertained.

“It has been alleged that Liton has formed a gang and has been kidnapping people and holding them for ransom for close to two months now,” Prince said.
