The accident occurred in the Shah Porir Dwip area of Teknaf early Monday, said local police OC Md Mainuddin Khan.

The victims were four women and six children.

According to the other passengers, there were a total of 65 on the boat. Locals have rescued 22 of them.

The coastguards, locals and police took part in the rescue, said Khan.

Many Rohingyas have died while making the crossing to Bangladesh from the Myanmar border state of Rakhine. It is estimated that over 60 died after one boat capsized on Sept 28, while another 30 died in an accident on Oct 8.

Myanmar began a military crackdown in Rakhine on Aug 25 after insurgents attacked border police posts and a military camp.

Over 500,000 members of the Rohingya minority have fled to Bangladesh since the start of an operation the UN has described as ‘ethnic cleansing’.
