Melted steel burns nine workers at Sitakunda re-rolling mill

At least nine workers of a re-rolling mill have been burnt, one of them severely, when melted steel splashed from a furnace at Sitakunda in Chittagong.

The injured workers have been admitted to the port city's Al Amin Hospital after the incident that occurred at Sheema Automatic Re-Rolling Mills Limited at Banu Bazar in Bhatiari on Sunday morning, the police said.

Sitakunda Police Station Sub-Inspector Mohammad Saifullah told bdnews24.com "the workers were burnt while melting steel in the furnace".

Quoting doctors, he said among the victims, Nizam Uddin, 32, was severely burnt.

The police were investigating the incident.

The other injured workers have been identified as Mohammad Hasan, 38, Mohammad Nasir Uddin, 40, Sekandar Ali, 48, Sanjay Das, 29, Omar Faruq, 35, Mohammad Mostafa, 27, Mohammad Raju, 30 and Shafiqul Islam, 33.

Factory Manager Nazim Uddin told bdnews24.com that 'some' workers were 'slightly injured' in the accident.

"The factory authorities are getting them treated at Al Amin Hospital," he said.

Nizam suspects it was an accident caused by technical glitch.
