The homes of Abdul Majid and Abzal Hossain in Nachol Upazila and the homes of Ezabul Hoque and Shukur Uddin in Gomostapur Upazila were cordoned off around 4am on Wednesday on suspicion of harbouring militants.

An end to the operation was declared at 11:30am by Chapainawabganj-based RAB-5 chief Mahbubul Alam in front of Shukur Uddin’s home.

“Three people were detained from Gomostapur Upazila’s Bazarpara around 4 am on Wednesday. They are members of the neo-JMB Tamim-Sarwar Group. RAB found they were planning attacks,” he told the media.

The three have been identified as Jahangir Alam, 43, Abdus Shukur alias Shukuddi, 43 and Saiful Alam, 32.

More than 50 militants are active in the Chapainawabganj area, claimed senior RAB officer Alam adding Wednesday's raids were conducted after questioning those detained.

One Abdul Majid has been taken in for questioning after the raid at his home at Nachol Upazila's Chandpara Village.

“Three pistols, nine bullets and two magazines have been seized from the home of Shukur Uddin in Gomostapur Upazila's Shimultala.”

RAB said it had arrested Shukur on Wednesday morning, but his father Mafiz Uddin claimed that a group identifying themselves as law enforcement officials had detained him about 15 days ago.

Senior RAB officer Alam, however, denied the allegation.

Shukur is the suspect in the 2012 murder case of a JMB operative named Salman, he added.
