US President Donald Trump will also join the summit scheduled for May 21. This is his maiden foreign tour as the president of the United States.

During her stay in the kingdom from May 20-23, Hasina will promote Bangladesh’s stance against militancy and extremism, Foreign Affairs Minister AH Mahmood Ali said at a media briefing on Thursday.

“The visit is expected to boost the bilateral relations,” he said.

Saudi Culture and Information Minister Awwad bin Saleh Al-Awwad came to Dhaka on May 9 and handed over the invitation letter to the prime minister.

The summit aims to create solidarity against extremism and militancy.

“The prime minister will present her observations on what can be done jointly from an international platform to overcome militancy,” Ali said.

When asked if Bangladesh is joining the 34 Muslim nations which have agreed to form an alliance to fight terrorism under the leadership of Saudi Arabia, the minister said: “It is called Global Centre for Combating Extremist Thoughts. It is still developing and cannot be called an alliance yet.”

“Bangladesh will initially help research work for the platform. We will send soldiers if Makkah or Madinah, which is close to people’s heart, comes under threat,” said the minister.
