Court suspends district council polls in more than 30 wards

The High Court has suspended district council elections in 34 wards in 21 districts, including elections for the chairman position in Bogra.

The orders have been issued after writ petitions were filed in the High Court, Election Commission Deputy Secretary Farhad Ahmed Khan told bdnews24.com.

“Voting in these areas has been suspended until the court announces a final decision,” he said.

EC law branch officials say they have petitioned for a stay on the High Court’s order. The hearing is set for Jan 5.

Local government representatives are casting their votes in the district council elections for the first time between 9 am and 2 pm on Wednesday.

There are a total 836 centres, one in each ward.

Satkhira – 9, 12 and 13; Jessore – 2, 3, 9; Sylhet 3, 9, 8, 14; Pabna – 7, Magura – 11, Munshiganj – 7, Habiganj – 12; Cox’s Bazar – 3, 4; Kurigram – 3, 6, 10; Gaibandha – 8,10; Noakhali – 2, 4, 6, 9; Brahmanbarhia – 1, 3; Chittagong – 13, Bagerhat – 1; Bogra – 6, 12, 14; Kushtia – 1 and Khulna – 14.
