Speaker Shirin Sharmin proposes forging stronger ties between Sino-Bangla parliaments

Calling on the visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping, Bangladesh Parliament's Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has urged forging greater ties between the parliaments of the two countries.

The speaker led an 11-member delegation at the meeting with the Chinese president at the Le Meriden Hotel in Dhaka on Friday afternoon. The meeting lasted for 20 minutes.
 
Chaudhury later told journalists, “We have discussed the issue (as to) how we can make parliament more effective through exchange of views among the lawmakers of the two countries."
 
She said that she told the visiting Chinese leader that arranging frequent exchange visits of lawmakers can help strengthen the ties.
 
A press release from the parliament secretariat quoted the Chinese President as saying, “Bangladesh is a country of excellent possibilities. In the recent years it has made tremendous progress on the social and economic fronts.”
 
“Bangladesh is ahead of many other countries in terms of women development and empowerment. China attaches great importance to investment in Bangladesh and many investors are eager to invest in Bangladesh. Chinese investment in Bangladesh will continue in future.”
 
Speaking about the meeting with the visiting Chinese premier, Chief Whip ASM Feroz said, “Discussion on strengthening ties between Bangladesh and Chinese parliaments was the main agenda of their meeting and the visiting premier responded positively to it.”
  
BNP Chief Khaleda Zia’s meeting was next on President Xi’s schedule.
 
Xi, the first Chinese head of state visiting Bangladesh in three decades, arrived in Dhaka Friday morning.
