Police disperse protesters opposing power plant near Sundarbans

Police in Dhaka have broken up a demonstration protesting the construction of a power plant in Bagerhat’s Rampal near the Sundarbans.

Tear-gas canisters were lobbed at a procession, which was heading towards the Prime Minister’s Office, at the capital’s Shahbagh area.

The march, which started from the National Press Club around 11:30am, was stopped by law enforcers after it reached the Rupashi Bangla Hotel intersection around 12:15pm.

 

A bdnews24.com correspondent reported from the spot that tear-gas canister were lobbed when the protesters tried to move past the police barricade.

Shahbagh police OC Abu Bakar Siddique told bdnews24.com four to five people have been detained from the demonstration.

Doctors at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital said that they have treated at least six protestors, who fell sick from tear gas shells and received injuries in the skirmish.
