Seven men, including Narayanganj City Councillor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar, were abducted. Their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya River several days later.

Twenty three of the suspects were produced before the court of Narayanganj’s District and Sessions Judge Syed Enayet Hossain on Monday for hearing the framing of charges in the murder case.

The court has fixed Feb 25 for witness depositions, said Additional Public Prosecutor KM Fazlur Rahman.

City Corporation Panel Mayor and Councillor Nazrul Islam, Advocate Chandan Sarkar and five others were whisked away from Dhaka-Narayanganj link road on Apr 27 in 2014.

Their bodies were found floating on the Shitalakkhyya River several days later.

Islam’s wife Selina Islam and Sarkar’s son-in-law filed two separate cases over the murders with the police.

In April 2015, police pressed charges against 35 persons, including Councillor Nur Hossain and three ex-officials of the Narayanganj-based RAB unit.

The widow of the slain councillor, evidently dissatisfied with the chargesheet, appealed to the court seeking fresh investigations.

The court had dismissed her objections. Her plea was also turned down by the district judge’s court.

She then moved the High Court, which said police can, if needed, conduct further investigations in the case even after the submission of the chargesheet.
