The driver suffered minor burns in the attack, though the bus was unharmed on Sunday during a blockade enforced by BNP-led alliance.

Locals caught, beat up and handed over to police six suspected blockaders.

Police said they were members of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student affiliate of BNP’s ally Jamaat-e-Islami.

The suspected attackers and the driver were admitted to local hospitals.

The bus was heading from Itakhola Bazar to Molamgarihat when it was attacked around 4pm, Khetlal police chief Monirul Islam said.

Six youths riding two motorbikes hurled a crude bomb on the bus and then a petrol bomb when it came to Karimpur.

The petrol bomb hit the driver Abdul Barik’s right hand.

One ‘Ujjal’, travelling on the roof of the bus, jumped off and was badly injured.

Locals chased the bombers and caught one of the bikes.

The other was held at Nishchinta Bazar, the police official said.

They torched one of the bikes, Monirul said.

Severely injured Ujjal died at the Joypurhat Modern Hospital in the evening, he added.
