Bill tabled to set up Islami Arabic University

A bill was tabled in Parliament on Wednesday to set up an Islami Arabic University to run around 1,500 Fazil and Kamil madrasas in Bangladesh.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid tabled the ‘Islami Arabic University Bill-2013’.

The bill has been sent to the Standing Committee attached to the Ministry of Education for vetting. It has been asked to submit a report within 15 days.

The proposed law gives the university authorities the power to administer everything related to the Madrasa education system.
The bill proposes that the Khatib (chief Imam) of national mosque Baitul Mukarram, Principal of the Madrasa Teachers' Training Institute and the Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamiatul Modaresin be included as members of the university’s syndicate.
Leaders of Bangladesh Jamiatul Modaresin proposed setting up of the university when they met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on April 20, 2011. The bill was prepared with directions from the Prime Minister.
