Dhaka, Apr 5 (bdnews24.com) — Two Bangladeshi army men have been killed in a UN plane crash at the main airport of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in its capital.
The deceased were identified as Maj K M Ziaul Haque and corporal (clerk) Mohammad Yunus Mia.
The plane, which had been travelling from the northeastern city of Kisangani, crashed while trying to land during heavy rain at N'Djili airport in Kinshasa about 1:30 pm (local time) as it missed the runway, according to the UN website.
Alain Le Roy, the under secretary general for peacekeeping operations, told journalists that initial indications were that bad weather was a key factor in the crash.
The UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC (Monusco) reported that no one but one of the 34 passengers, including five crewmembers, survived.
Roy said five among the deceased were members of the UN peacekeeping mission.
UN deployed about 19,000 peacekeepers in the country favouring the battle against rebels.
About 5 million people died in the country in civil war between 1998 and 2003.
