First SAARC head Abul Ahsan dies

Diplomat and first SAARC secretary-general Abul Ahsan died late on Saturday at a city hospital, his family said.

Dhaka, Dec 7 (bdnews24.com) – Diplomat and first SAARC secretary-general Abul Ahsan died late on Saturday at a city hospital, his family said.
"He died of cardiac arrest and kidney failure at United Hospital at around 11.45am on Saturday," Sanyat Rahman, one of his nephews, told bdnews24.com Sunday
Rahman said Abul Ahsan had been suffering from the ailments for six to seven months, but the problem turned acute 15 days ago.
He will be buried at Banani graveyard after the second
namaz-e-janaza
after Zohr prayer at Gulshan Azad Mosque.
His children – a son and a daughter – will come to Dhaka from the United States on Monday.
Meanwhile, foreign adviser Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury and foreign secretary Md Touhid Hossain condoled the death of the diplomat.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday organised a condolence meeting.
Ambassador Abul Ahsan was appointed as the first secretary-general of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) on January 16, 1987 and continued through to Oct 15, 1989.
SAARC was established in Dhaka in 1985.
