Another infant has died after showing severe measles symptoms while undergoing treatment at a top state-run hospital in Sylhet.
The child passed away at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital within the last 24 hours, Directorate General of Health Services Assistant Director Mohammad Noore Alam Shamim said on Thursday.
The latest casualty brings the total number of child fatalities linked to the viral illness across the Sylhet division to 42 this year.
The deceased infant Hafizur Rahman was a 7-month-old from Rajnagar Upazila in Moulvibazar.
Official figures show 89 new patients with measles symptoms were hospitalised across the Sylhet Division in the 24 hours leading up to 8am on Thursday.
Currently, 286 patients are receiving medical care for measles-like conditions in different hospitals throughout the northeastern region.
Among them, 69 are receiving treatment at the Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital, while 79 are under care at Osmani Hospital, with the remaining patients distributed across other public and private healthcare facilities in the division.
Despite the high hospitalisation numbers, diagnostic laboratories did not confirm any new positive measles cases from the blood samples tested over the past 24 hours.
Since Jan 1, a total of 158 measles patients have been confirmed through laboratory testing in the division.
Of the 42 deaths this year, 38 died with measles symptoms and four from confirmed measles.
