A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for the killing his wife in Ashulia’s Jirabo a decade ago.
Rezaul Karim Madbar was convicted in a verdict declared by Dhaka Additional Sessions Judge Md Abdullah Al Masud on Thursday.
State lawyer Ziaul Haque said, "In addition to the sentence, the accused Rezaul has been fined Tk 10,000. The suspect is absconding on bail. An arrest warrant has been issued against him along with a sentence warrant."
According to the case details, Rezaul and Sima Akhter lived near Jirabo with their 8-year-old daughter. Sima worked in a garment factory, while Rezaul was unemployed.
When Sima urged her husband to find work, he would beat her.
Rezaul killed Sima by hitting her on the head and slitting her throat in the early hours of Apr 24, 2016 following a family dispute, the case documents allege. When he tried to flee, the owner of the house caught him and handed him over to police.
Sima's father Zahidul Islam filed a case with Ashulia Police Station over the killing on the same day. Rezaul confessed to the murder and gave a confessional statement to the court.
After investigating the case, Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Omar Faruk submitted a chargesheet to the court on Aug 31 of that year.
On Jan 11, 2017, charges were framed against the accused and the trial began. During the trial, the court heard the testimony of 12 people.
The defence could not present an argument to the court as Rezaul is absconding. Following the trial, the court declared its verdict on Thursday.
