Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met with the family members of two army personnel killed in a shell explosion during a tank firing exercise at the Hathazari Field Firing Range in Chattogram.
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister's Office in Dhaka’s Tejgaon on Tuesday morning, said the Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.
He said, "The prime minister spoke to the members of the martyred families and expressed his condolences to them over the tragic incident. The prime minister handed over cheques of financial assistance to the members of the martyred families. "
"The prime minister assured them that the government and the Army will always stand by the families of the two martyred soldiers."
Tarique's wife Zubaida Rahman, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman and senior army officials were present at the time.
On Sept 9, two soldiers were killed in a shell explosion during a tank firing exercise at the Hathazari Field Firing Range.
They were identified as Soldier (Operator) Abu Bakr Siddique and Soldier (Gunner) Md Tasnim Rifaat.
An army officer was seriously injured in the accident and is undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
The prime minister visited him at the CMH on Friday.
The premier met with the wife, young daughter, father, and mother of Abu Bakr, and the wife, young daughter, and father of Rifaat.
The deputy press secretary said, "The prime minister told the members of the martyrs’ families that the soldiers laid down their lives while performing their duties for the country and were martyred for the country. The nation will remember their sacrifice with deep respect.
“Expressing condolences to the family members, the prime minister said ‘We are with you and will be with you in this time of mourning. The government and the army will always stand by your family. In addition to providing necessary assistance, the government will also fulfil its responsibility to take care of the families of the martyred army members’.”
The deputy press secretary said that the army will take initiatives to build a house for each of the martyred army members’ families at their permanent addresses. At the same time, they have also been assured of providing jobs for their wives and monthly allowances for their children.
