Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury has taken oath as a permanent judge of the High Court Division.
Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury administered the oath at the Supreme Court’s Judges’ Lounge on Thursday in the presence of judges from the High Court and Appellate divisions.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir appointed him to the post on Monday in consultation with the chief justice under Article 95 of the Constitution, with the government subsequently issuing a gazette notification.
Roy Chowdhury was appointed an additional judge of the High Court on Oct 8, 2024.
Several additional judges appointed alongside him were made permanent in November 2025, but his confirmation was held back at the time.
The Supreme Court administration later said he had not been confirmed earlier because he had not yet turned 45.
Roy Chowdhury enrolled as a district court lawyer in 2005 after completing a higher law degree in Britain. He was enrolled as a lawyer of the High Court Division in 2007 and of the Appellate Division in 2018.
He is the son of Nitai Roy Chowdhury, minister for cultural affairs.
His appointment takes the number of permanent High Court judges to 100.
