A school headteacher from Bogura has died after falling from a rickshaw during a bag-snatching attempt near the parliament’s South Plaza in Dhaka.
The victim, 55-year-old Ranjina Parveen, was the headteacher of Bagbari Girls Government Primary School in Bogura’s Gabtali.
She had travelled to Dhaka early Saturday with her husband to visit Islamia Eye Institute & Hospital in Farmgate.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police chief Monirul Islam said the couple arrived in Gabtali by bus at dawn and took a rickshaw towards Farmgate.
Between 5:30am and 6am, as they were passing Khejur Bagan, two men on a motorbike attempted to snatch Parveen’s handbag.
“They pulled at the bag while the rickshaw was moving. She fell and suffered a severe head injury,” the officer said.
Parveen was taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Police are working to identify the motorbike and those involved.
“A case is being processed. We are trying to track down the culprits,” Monirul added.
