A cargo ship has struck an anchored vessel at Chittagong Port’s outer anchorage, the latest in a series of shipping incidents in the area this month.
The bulk carrier MV Anassa came into contact with the bow of the anchored MV Jahab Jahan at the Alpha Anchorage amid strong currents at 12:35am on Sunday, according to Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim.
No one was injured and neither vessel suffered major damage, he said.
“There were no casualties. No water entered the vessels and there was no environmental pollution.”
The two ships were separated and safely anchored following the incident, he added.
All 21 crew members aboard the two vessels are safe, while vessel movements in the area have returned to normal, authorities said.
The incident follows another collision in Chittagong Port waters on Friday, when the MT Sea Spike, a tanker carrying 33,000 tonnes of diesel, collided with the anchored bulk carrier MV Sunshine around 12:30pm.
The collision caused a crack in the Sea Spike’s engine room, but no water entered its cargo tanks and no oil was spilled, according to the port authorities.
Repairs to the tanker are under way at the site.
Earlier, on Aug 3, the Malta-flagged container ship MV CNC Uranus became stranded near the mouth of the Karnaphuli River while entering the port.
Port officials said the 170-metre vessel suffered a mechanical fault and struck Buoy No. 2 after its steering failed. It then became stuck against a protective wall near the river mouth.
On Aug 11, the vessel’s master and shipping agent were fined Tk 10 million over allegations that they had concealed a fault in its steering gear before entering Chattogram Port.
