Rising rainfall has pushed water levels in northeastern rivers higher, with the Kushiara and Khowai now flowing above danger levels in Sylhet and Habiganj.
A low-pressure system has also formed over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-Bangladesh coast and could intensify, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said on Wednesday.
At 9am, Kushiara was 23cm above danger level at Sylhet’s Fenchuganj, while Khowai was 20cm above the threshold at Balla in Habiganj.
Monu, Dhalai and Khowai also rose over the past 24 hours. Khowai may stabilise for a day before falling, while Monu and Dhalai may rise for a day and then remain stable.
Surma-Kushiara levels are generally falling and may continue to do so for three days.
Gomti, Muhuri, Selonia, Feni, Halda and Sangu have risen, while Matamuhuri has fallen.
Brahmaputra-Jamuna levels may keep falling for five days, while Ganges-Padma levels may rise. Both should remain below danger levels.
