Police have arrested 42 people in capital Dhaka's Mohammadpur and Adabar on charges of extortion, theft, mugging and drug trafficking, as authorities continue operations to curb crime in the city.

The operation ran from 8pm to 12 midnight on Friday, Tejgaon Division’s Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan told bdnews24.com.

“We have arrested 42 individuals from two police station areas. Our operation will continue. No extortionist, mugger or drug dealer will be allowed to operate,” he said.

“We are keeping a close watch on ‘Kishore Gang’ and will not allow them to gain any foothold,” the officer added.

Earlier, police carried out a sweep in Mohammadpur on Wednesday night, arresting around 100 individuals.

Following that operation, newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir visited Mohammadpur late Thursday night to oversee law and order.

He toured the neighbourhood and inspected Mohammadpur Police Station.

“Extortionists, muggers, drug dealers and ‘Kishore Gang’ members are often released on bail after arrest and quickly return to crime,” the IGP said.

“To control this, a list of offenders released on bail will be maintained locally,” he added. “They will report to the police station weekly and confirm that they are staying on the right path. This system has already begun.”

On Friday night’s raids, officer Mizan said: “Twelve people were arrested in Adabar and 30 in Mohammadpur. They are accused of extortion, theft, mugging and drug-related offences.”
