The interim government's Advisory Council has held a special prayer session for the recovery of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who remains in critical condition in hospital.

The session took place on Saturday at the office of Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, who presided over the meeting. Religious Affairs Advisor AFM Khalid Hossain led the prayers, according to a statement by the Chief Advisor's Office (CAO).

On Friday, Yunus expressed concern over Khaleda's deteriorating health and called on the public to pray for her swift recovery.

The 79-year-old former prime minister was admitted to Dhaka's Evercare Hospital on Nov 23 after a chest infection was detected during medical tests. She has long suffered from multiple chronic health complications.

Her treatment is being overseen by a medical board led by Prof Shahabuddin Talukder.

Earlier, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said he stayed at the hospital until after 2am on Friday and that doctors were keeping Khaleda Zia under “intensive observation”.

He described her condition as “extremely critical”.
