Bangladesh has signed an agreement with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to implement a €1.125 million European Union-funded project aimed at strengthening climate mobility governance and regional cooperation across South Asia.
The agreement was signed on Thursday between the Economic Relations Division (ERD) of the Ministry of Finance and IOM Bangladesh to implement the three-year project, "Promoting a Comprehensive Approach to Climate Mobility in South Asian Countries”, according to a media statement.
The agreement was signed by Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, secretary of the ERD, and Dr Laura Tomm Bonde, chief of mission of IOM Bangladesh.
The project will strengthen climate mobility data and information systems, expand research and knowledge exchange, encourage diaspora engagement in climate action, enhance community resilience, and promote regional collaboration among South Asian countries on climate-related displacement and migration, the statement said.
At the signing ceremony, Siddiky said the government remains committed to addressing the growing challenges of climate-induced human mobility.
He called for climate mobility to be integrated into national development planning, disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation strategies to better protect vulnerable communities.
He also praised IOM for supporting migration governance, evidence generation for policymaking, assistance to vulnerable people and the promotion of safe, orderly and regular migration in line with Bangladesh's development priorities.
The secretary said the initiative would strengthen institutional capacity, improve knowledge and data systems, support evidence-based policymaking and deepen regional cooperation.
Dr Bonde thanked the government, particularly the ERD, for its continued partnership.
She also acknowledged the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for its support and the European Union for financing the initiative.
Both Bangladesh and IOM reaffirmed their commitment to improving the country's preparedness for climate-related mobility challenges, expressing confidence that the project would advance Bangladesh's climate mobility agenda while creating opportunities for regional learning and cooperation across South Asia.
