Police have recovered a shotgun from the false ceiling of a bathroom in an under-construction building in Dhaka’s Bosila area.

Police suspect the weapon was looted from a police station on Aug 5, 2024.

Hazaribagh police chief (OC) Mosharraf Hossain confirms the weapon was recovered around 2am on Wednesday.

He told bdnews24.com that a new tenant on the second floor of an under-construction building in Bosila’s Modhyopara area found the shotgun after opening the bathroom's false ceiling to store his belongings.

He then called the national emergency service 999, following which Hazaribagh police went to the spot and recovered the weapon.

"We initially believe a previous tenant left the weapon there. We are trying to identify them. The landlord has their name and mobile number," the OC says.

A police member present at the scene during the recovery says the weapon is one that was looted from a police station, adding that the shotgun is believed to have been looted from Mohammadpur Police Station on Aug 5, 2024.

Police Inspector Anwar Sattar, media and public relations officer of the national emergency service 999, says the recovered shotgun bears the markings "ST-12", "TAURUS", "BP-MTCL", "SHR165771", and "Made in Brazil".

OC Mosharraf says a case has been filed over the incident, but no one has been detained or arrested so far.
