With an order already in place to confiscate former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s assets, attention is now turning to how that order will be enforced.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has begun the process of amending its Rules of Procedure to clarify the mechanism.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam told reporters at the prosecution office on Monday that the amendment would also apply to judgments already delivered, including Hasina’s case.

“If the Rules of Procedure are amended, they will apply to the case involving ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina as well as other judgments already delivered,” he said.

On Nov 17, the tribunal sentenced Hasina and her former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in the July crimes against humanity case.

It also ordered the confiscation of all their assets in Bangladesh.

This raises questions over which of Hasina’s assets could be confiscated and what property is registered in her name.

Her affidavit submitted to the Election Commission for the 2024 election provides an indication. Hasina contested in the Gopalganj-3 constituency in that election.

Assets in Sheikh Hasina’s Name

Hasina, then prime minister, declared movable and immovable assets worth Tk 43.6 million to the Election Commission.

She reported an income of Tk 10.7 million in 2022, a significant portion of which came from agriculture. Her agricultural income had quadrupled compared with 2018.

Her income from securities had doubled, while she had invested Tk 7.5 million in fixed deposits and savings certificates over four years from 2018 to 2021.

According to her income tax return, her annual income was Tk 19.1 million.

The affidavit showed she owned three motor vehicles, one of them a gift. The other two were valued at Tk 4.75 million.

Her gold and other precious metals were valued at Tk 1.33 million, while household furniture was worth Tk 740,000.

Hasina declared 2.04 hectares of agricultural land, with the purchased portion valued at Tk 678,000. The rest was inherited. The land is located in Tungipara, Gopalganj Sadar, Gazipur and Rangpur.

In Tungipara, Gopalganj, 0.025 hectares of land, partly occupied by a three-storey building, was valued at Tk 500,000.

A family garden house lies in Telirchala in Mouchak, about 13km from Gazipur city, beside the Dhaka-Tangail Highway and east of the Bangladesh Scouts training centre.

Around 1970, a local man transferred the land in the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Hasina and Sheikh Rehana inherited it, later transferring portions to their children.

The owners thus included Hasina’s children Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Saima Wazed Tulip, and Rehana’s children Radwan Mujib Siddiq and Azmina Siddiq. Documents list the land at 1.2 hectares.

Her affidavit also listed a plot in Purbachal worth Tk 3.48 million.

While she was prime minister, about 0.99 hectares in total was allocated in 10-katha plots to Hasina, Joy, Tulip, Rehana, Radwan and Azmina.

They have since been convicted in ACC cases over allegations that the plots were obtained through corruption and irregularities.

ACC Objections over 2008 Affidavit

In 2025, the Anti-Corruption Commission wrote to the Election Commission seeking legal action against Hasina over allegations that she concealed assets in her affidavit for the 2008 election.

The ACC said she had provided “false” information about her assets and asked the EC to act under the Representation of the People Order, 1972.

Hasina declared 2.63 hectares of agricultural land worth Tk 175,000. The ACC said its verification found 11.5 hectares in her name, including purchased land worth Tk 3.37 million.

It alleged she concealed 8.87 hectares and understated the value by Tk 3.19 million.

The ACC also alleged that Hasina imported a Mercedes-Benz worth €230,000 using the duty-free vehicle import quota of then Magura-1 MP Mohammad Sirajul Akbar.

A total of Tk 19.32 million was paid through a bank against the letter of credit. The vehicle was registered at her Dhanmondi address, Sudha Sadan, and used by her.

However, neither Sirajul Akbar’s tax return nor his pre-election affidavit mentioned the vehicle, and he never used it.

Who Owns Dhanmondi 32 Home?

Hasina left power and went to India on Aug 5, 2024, following the student-led uprising. She has remained in Delhi since then.

That afternoon, Ganabhaban, the prime minister’s residence, was looted, with furniture and valuables taken away.

Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi 32 was also attacked and set ablaze. In February 2025, the historic house was demolished with excavators.

Bangabandhu began living in the three-storey house on Oct 1, 1961, and led Bangladesh’s independence movement from there. Pakistani forces arrested him from the house on the night of Mar 25, 1971. He and most of his family were killed there on Aug 15, 1975.

When Hasina returned in 1981, she was initially barred from entering. She obtained ownership after paying a loan instalment on Jun 10 that year, but never lived there.

She later handed the house to the Bangabandhu Memorial Trust to turn it into a museum. The trust established the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum.

The property is therefore no longer owned by Hasina. Sudha Sadan in Dhanmondi is owned by her son Sajeeb Wazed and daughter Saima Wazed.
