Police arrest father for ‘strangling’ 3-year-old to death in Badda

The child was strangled to death by his drug-addict father during a domestic fight on Monday night, police say

Police have arrested a man for allegedly strangling his 3-year-old child to death in Dhaka’s Badda.

The child has been identified as Habib and the father as Md Shaheen. The incident occurred on Monday night at Beraid Rishipara in Badda.

Sub Inspector (SI) Jamal Hossain said that the child's body was recovered from Zulhas Mia's rented house in Rishipara around 11:15pm on Monday night. Neighbours learnt that the child's father was a drug addict and there was constant domestic conflict over poverty. On Monday night, during a fight, the child was strangled to death by his drug-addict father.

SI Jamal said, “The child's father, Shaheen, is a drug addict. He used to drive a rickshaw, but now he doesn't do anything (for a living). The child's mother, Shilpi Khatun, works as a household aide and provides for the family. If he did not get money for drugs from his wife, the two would start arguing.”

The child's body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem on Tuesday. The couple has another son.

The deceased Habib is the younger of the two brothers.
